How to design a small kitchen?

RULE # 1 Use a small sink.

Do you need a big sink? For most of the people double sink is just a space for storing all the dirty dishes and garbage, which is not a good designer's decision neither for small kitchen nor for a big one. You could gain up to 24 inches of the counter space by using a single instead of double sink.

RULE # 2 Use space saving corner units

Space is the most important treasure for the small kitchen. Using space saving corner units would give you more storage. All your pots and pans could be successfully stored on the moving kidney-shape shelves: mechanisms would allow you to conveniently access all of the stuff items. Or use corner pull-out unit for storing fork and knives in the top drawer and all your plates in the bottom ones.

RULE # 3 Use "All-Drawers" cabinets

Kitchen cabinets with all drawers will help you dramatically to increase your space-efficient use of you kitchen. You could easily access all the items stored in the drawers. Metal construction of the unit with drawers is extremely easy to clean. Plus, you can avoid the collection of unnecessary or forgotten stuff on the back of the shelf as it usually happens.

RULE # 4 Use light and high-gloss materials

It is just the same with clothes: dark shade dress makes you look thin and white outfit shows up that yesterday after-dinner cheese cake. Using light finishes such as white, off-white, ivory, light blue, light pink, light grey or purple (etc) would make your kitchen look more spacious. High-gloss lacquer materials would attract more light and optically enlarge your kitchen.(I mean real lacquer - don't confuse with shinny foil, which is very hard to maintain)

RULE # 5 Backsplash and undercabinet lights

Use light shade and shiny backsplash: glass mosaic or polished tile. Adding undercabinet lights will create a huge lighting fixtures out of your backsplash. More light will create an optical illusion of more space. Also, it looks luxury and would not cost you a lot because you dont have alot of wall space. I recommend to cover with cool shinny glass mosaic or tile all the wall around the wall cabinets, the kitchen would look accomplished and sophisticated.
